Planting Care & Instructions

Plant Rhubarb in early spring after the danger of frost has passed in a sunny or partially shaded location with well draining soil. Spacing is important. Plants will not develop and are more prone to disease if planted too close together.

Soil preparation is very important to have a successful crop. Prepare the soil a month prior to planting by incorporating a good garden fertilizer into the soil. Plant the crowns 3.5 to 4 inches below the surface with the crown bud about 2 inches below the soil. Space the crowns 1.5 to 2 feet apart. Do not harvest the first year. This will allow the plant to send its energy and nutrients back to the roots to ensure a strong root system.

Harvest 3 to 4 stems of each plant at a time, leaving some stems to generate growth.

Growing Tips

Do not remove more than half of the stalk when harvesting.
