Gloriosa is a climbing lily originating in the tropics of South Africa and India with exotic red blooms and streaks of yellow that will add a colorful splash to your garden.
The vine attaches itself by means of tendrils at the tips of their leaves. Their unusual flowers with reflexed petals make an outstanding cut flower in arrangements.
Plant in the spring after the danger of frost has passed. Soil Preparation: Plant in average, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Light shade produces the best foliage color as too much shade or excessive fertilization can diminish foliage color.
Planting: Dig a hole and plant bulb 3-4" deep and 6-8" apart. Bulb can be laid on its side because it will find out which way is up.
Watering: Water thoroughly at planting. While actively growing, water frequently and thoroughly so that water will reach the roots.
Mulching: Mulch to keep the soil cool and to prevent the soil from drying out.
Fertilizing: Half-strength fertilizer added to water every two weeks will keep plant blooming throughout the summer.
Once vine is planted and established you can begin to train it to grow where you want it to. Use fabric ties or garden wire to tie the stems to the trellis until they naturally grab on and climb up on their own. Choose a large stem and bring it as close to the trellis as possible. Tie the fabric or wire off in the back of the trellis where it will not get in the way of the vine's growth. Repeat this step with any other large stems and continue up the main stem as the vine grows.
