About

Lilac syringavulgaris is an upright, multi-stemmed, suckering, deciduous shrub in the olive family that typically matures to 12-16 feet tall and 8-12 feet wide. Its flowers are very fragrant - ranging in color from white to purple. It is a good cut flower that is beloved for bouquets.

It is a very reliable spring-flowering shrub for cold winter gardens. Excellent choice as a specimen or accent in small groups, shrub borders, hedges or screens. Great in cottage gardens or in the margins of woodland gardens.

Planting Care & Instructions

Plant in well-drained soil 6-12" deep with crown at soil level, 10-12' apart.

Soil and site: Select a site with full sun to partial shade and moist, well-drained soil. Water infrequently but thoroughly during dry periods or drought. Lilacs are a low maintenance shrub that, with a little care, will last a lifetime.

Pruning: Prune immediately after flowering, removing dead and broken branches. You may then cut back to desired size and shape.

Growing Tips

Water weekly or more often in extreme heat.
